The Board of Directors and the Founder Representatives of the GMTO Corporation adopt this resolution in celebration of Dr. Steiner’s life and his great contributions to the Giant Magellan Telescope: “As we remember our colleague and friend, we ask not –’how did he die?’ but instead we celebrate how he lived and the many great and lasting gifts he bestowed on us!
João was a dedicated astronomer whose collegial style allowed all around him to absorb his intelligence and love of the universe. He freely shared his knowledge and took great joy in teaching others about astronomy, often leading impromptu and interesting discussions at lunch and dinner for all who pulled up a chair. He taught from a level playing field, always taking care that those who were at best neophytes might learn as much as those with years of knowledge.
He had a vision and led a Brazilian delegation in its decision o join the Giant Magella Telescope project, convincing the State of São Paulo to contribute significant dollars to the cause. He saw the value in investing in the future of astronomy and through his expert diplomacy transformed his vision of Brazil’s participation in the GMT into a reality. His dedication to his profession extended beyond the subject matter to also include the instruments that would lead to great discoveries.
João was at his heart a gentleman. He always had a kind word or a meaningful greeting for all he encountered. His love of astronomy, of teaching, of people and of the Giant Magellan Telescope will be his legacy. We will miss his smile and sage advice, and mostly his friendship and intellect.
The Giant Magellan Telescope has lost a great supporter and friend. Rest in pease João, knowing that there are great frontiers yet to cross, the genesis for which you helped to put in motion We know you are glittering somewhere in the great beyond beckoning us forward to new and amazing discoveries.”
