SCIENCE AT THE GMT

What is the GMT science?

A telescope like the GMT will be an essential tool for studying celestial bodies. The size of the GMT mirrors will provide the study of celestial bodies that is not possible with currently existing telescopes - part of the optical telescope generation with classes between eight and ten meters.

The expectation is that it will be possible to observe, faster and in more detail, targets already known. The GMT is also expected to find objects that are not distinguishable from other telescopes because they are low-bright targets in the sky.

This new window on the universe will help scientists from Brazil and around the world to understand several phenomena that occur in space, expanding our knowledge of nature, and providing new discoveries and future technological uses.

Understanding how the first stars and galaxies were formed is still a mystery to science. Finding planets like Earth and observing the first evidence of life outside it are also major challenges. The GMT will focus on these and other objects of study to collaborate in the advancement of astronomy undertaken worldwide.
