About us

The GMT (Giant Magellan Telescope) is being built by an international consortium, composed by the following institutions: Arizona State University, Astronomy Australia Limited, The Australian National University, Carnegie Institution for Science, FAPESP - São Paulo Research Foundation, Harvard University, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, The Smithsonian Institution, Texas A&M University, University of Texas at Austin, Steward Observatory, University of Chicago. The participation of FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) in this consortium will place Brazilian astronomers at the forefront of international astronomical and astrophysical research.

The office in Brazil (GMTBrO - GMT Brazil Office) is led by IAG/USP - Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences, coordinated by Professors Laerte Sodre Junior and Claudia Mendes de Oliveira.

We also have valuable national partners, among them: UNIVAP - University of Paraíba Valley, IMT - Mauá Institute of Technology and Polytechnic School at the University of São Paulo (Poli-USP).
